With 70 mini sewer jetting machines lined up on the occasion of ‘World Environment Day’, Telangana’s manual scavengers can now breathe some fresh air—quite literally!
The state has launched these jetting machines to eliminate manual scavenging across the state. Targeting over 4.7 lakh manholes, each vehicle costs Rs 26 lakh. While SBI loans Rs 20 lakh, the entrepreneur has to invest Rs 6 lakh to own the machine, said a Business Standard report.
The project is the brainchild of the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DICCI), an organisation that works closely with Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Several individuals from the Telangana government participated in the initiative. As part of the Swachh Bharat campaign to eliminate manual scavenging, bacteria-free clothing and mini sewer jetting machines have been introduced for the operators. Municipal Minister KT Rama Rao said, As we are living in a developing nation, manual scavenging should be abolished and safety of labourers should be taken care of, so we have launched these mini sewer jetting machines.
The new machines are much more compact when compared to the previous process and can work effectively even in narrow lines says a report by The News Minute. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will be managing the maintenance of these machines. The sewage board, which has so far been using 58 air tech machines to clean the city’s 4.7 lakh manholes, lacked the infrastructure to enter narrow lanes.
